This is a quick demo of the alterfrn software. This should help with a raspberry PI install. The demo does not show how to connect to a network as this can vary.
In part1 I install Debian. This is a current I386 release, but the point is to show how minimal it is running on.Most people do not need to watch this install.
In part 2 , I am downloading (via commandline) using wget the I386 version of alterfrn. Other versions are available on the website including the PI version.
The website is :
I then use tar to unzip the file. Remember Linux is POSIX compliant, so beware it is case sensitive!
I then delete the tar file (this is not needed…)
I then try to run alterfrn , knowing it will fail due how minimal my Debian install is (no sound utils)
ALSA=Advanced Linux Sound Architecture…
I then install ALSA and it's utils.
Alsamixer is very important as you can control the volume controls with it, which will be needed.
I then show how to edit the main config file with nano. I have a separate text file just to show you this.
In part 3 I show you how to get the software to load on startup. Htop is not needed, but it's a handy system tool for cli.
To get the com port to key on alterfrn it is helpful to be logged in as root. For testing, log in as root, but the above setting of loading the software on startup will run the software as root.
